The Fairy-tale of Elizabeth, The Odd Princess of Birds

A long, long time ago, but maybe not so long, a magnificent kingdom spread through green hills. A wise and just king ruled there, and none would equal him in greatness and wealth. Those, who lived in that land loved and respected their king, and green hills remained quiet and peaceful.

And the king loved nothing more than his little daughter, the princess Elisabeth. Not one knew who was her mother – though some said she was of the fairy folk of the forest… Of the fairy folk or not, but Elisabeth had a special gift from the very moment of her birth: she knew the language of birds, and the birds understood her too. The princess grew up thoughtful and silent; the noisy games of her fellow children did not attract her; she preferred loneliness and walking in the royal garden, which was so huge that one would need a day to pass from one end of it to another. The girl wandered through empty alleys and the birds flew to her to sing the best songs, tell her about foreign lands and eat the cake crumbs that she always brought for them. The birds were her best friends; and the king too, who spent all his time, whenever he was free of ruling the kingdom, with her, and never forgot to tell her a bedtime story or two.

So passed ten years, and when Elisabeth became sixteen years old, there was not one girl who would equal to her in beauty, and not only in the Green Hills Kingdom, but also beyond its borders.
Rumors of the young and beautiful princess reached the dark Kingdom of Dead Rocks, which was ruled by an evil enchantress. Her lands were a desert, above which the sun never rose, and only dark ghostly shadows danced in the dim half-light among thickets of thorny wines, which bore no flowers and no leaves.
Learning of the princess, the enchantress decided to destroy her by all means. Choosing the longest night of the year, she flew to the Green Hills Kingdom and entered the castle’s garden. But when she came near the castle, the beloved royal hound, which always protected the sleep of the castle’s denizens, scented her and woke the king with his loud bark. The king hastily led his guardsmen to the garden, where he saw the witch-queen surrounded by dark spirits. A bloody battle was fought, and the fingers of the enchantress turned into sharp swords sowing death. The guardsmen were defeated, and the king – mortally wounded. Putting all the love he had for his daughter into his last blow, the king pierced the heart of the enchantress, and when she fell dead, he died too on the stairs of the castle. But he failed to win the battle even at the cost of his own life. During the night in the very same place, where the witch-queen’s blood was spilled, a black flower sprung: beautiful, but deadly and poisonous. Its scent tainted the air and in one night dried all the beautiful flowering trees of the royal garden and destroyed all living things. The garden turned into impassable prickly thickets, shrouded in dim half-light. The birds that survived flew into Elisabeth’s chambers to tell her what happened. Elisabeth’s chambers were in the highest tower of the castle, and the poisonous scent did not reach them yet. Struck by grief, the princess closed the doors with a key and shut the windows. After a few hours the rays of the rising sun shone into Elisabeth’s chambers; she took heart and opened the windows. The view of the garden surrounding the castle to the horizon was terrible, even sun could not penetrate the darkness covering it. All the ways out of the castle were cut, and Elisabeth became a prisoner of her own tower.
But the birds did not abandon her. True friends, they brought her food while the sun was shining, because the power of the black flower grew weaker in daylight, and flew into Elisabeth’s chambers with the last rays of the sun, where they passed the night – in safety of the shut windows.
It was from the birds that the princess knew that people, frightened by the view of the black forest, which the royal garden turned into, left their lands, and the once flourishing lands were deserted. But Elisabeth tried not to give in to despair. Every night she dreamt the same dream: Once a brave night will enter the haunted forest, destroy the black flower and release her kingdom from the dark rule. That day, she knew, would surely come…
The birds too decided to help Elisabeth. A part of them stayed near the castle to find food for the princess, and the others left to the faraway lands to find a knight for her rescue. Many months had passed when at last the smallest bird, Elisabeth's favorite, found a knight in the farthest kingdom, and the knight lived in his ancestral castle. The knight was young and bold, and had dreamt for a long time about distinguishing himself in a battle, but the lands he lived in were peaceful, and the only thing he could do was hunting. The little bird watched him for some time, until it was sure the knight was valiant and bold, and then started to sing beneath his window every morning. Those song brought dreams to the knight, and every time the dream was the same: the knight dreamt of a young maiden, beautiful and sorrowful, imprisoned in a high tower and surrounded by a dark forest.
Waking up he felt yearning coming over him, and every time he saw a bird sitting on his windowsill. Understanding that the dream should mean something, he equipped his horse and left on a quest to find the girl from his waking dreams. The bird flew with him too; to guide him on his way. Long was their road, until at last they reached the Green Hill kingdom. Other birds joined them on their way, and when the knight reached the dark forest the a whole flock surrounded him. He dismounted and left his horse on the edge of the forest. A wall of sinister trees and thorny thickets stood before him, and there was no chance he would overcome them. Except for... Taking his sheathed sword in his hands he held it high above his head and looked at the birds.
Two of the mightiest eagles took him high, above the domain of poisonous vapors, above the dark forest, and brought him where the poisonous flower grew. The young knight held his breath, and the birds quickly brought him down to earth in several feet from the flower and flew up again. He had no more than two minutes - that's how long the oxygen in his lungs would last. But when he bared his sword and walked to the black flower, which had grown higher than his head was, it felt danger and let out a cloud of black smoke, which led him astray. The young knight tried to find his way back to the flower to the feel, and then the smallest bird, Elisabeth's favorite, together with other birds circling in the sky landed on the flower with a piercing cry, and the youth struck to the sound and saw the shaft of black, covered with thorns sapping poison. The knight swung his sword and cut the
shaft.
And at the very same moment he did it the smoke cleared, and the black flower disappeared, and the thorny thickets turned into grass and flowers, and the trees started to blossom. The knight took the little bird that had fallen to the ground and entered the castle. Elisabeth hurried towards him and her excitement and shyness made her ever so beautiful. The youth handed the princess the tiny creature that had sacrificed itself for her, and she took it and nestled it at her breast. Tears fell down her cheeks and fell on the bird, and then its little heart started to beat again. Elisabeth and the knight looked at each other and couldn’t take their eyes off each other. They did not fall in love with each other; they had already loved each other for quite some time… in their dreams.

*the story was written by me and translated into English by Bayandur Pogosyan (http://songoffall.blogspot.com/). And here is Russian version:
